The $400,000 Remington Springboard Mile Stakes at Remington Park on Sunday is a significant race for 2-year-olds who aspire to be considered Kentucky Derby quality in the upcoming months. A large field of 12 colts and geldings are entered in this year's edition, making for a competitive race and a potential large payout.

I was working in my office one day with my television tuned on horse racing, as usual. Woodbine Harness was among the last racing signals for the evening. I looked up and saw in the upcoming race 2 that the #5 horse, Montana Ben, had a morning line odds of 3-1, yet was 17-1 in the actual betting.

Now in all candor, I don’t bet a lot of harness races. I didn’t even have a Woodbine Harness program or past performances in front of me. But I do have a cell phone, a horse racing phone account and a system which Montana Ben fell into.

It’s not often that you get to see 2-year-olds run 1 1/8 miles in a graded stakes race because — quite simply — the only race held under those conditions in North America each year is the $250,000, Grade 2 Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct.

America’s Best Racing and handicapper (and avid gambler) Monique Vág team up to provide horseplayers with their best bets of the weekend in a regular feature blog that will run on Fridays.

For some posts, Vág will try to identify a longshot play of the weekend, a nice opportunity to swing for the fences on a win bet or to take a shot with a show bet. She also will look for strong exacta plays for the weekend or occasionally try to spot a nice opportunity for other wagers.

Dan’s Double of the Week, featuring handicapping analysis from America's Best Racing's New York correspondent Dan Tordjman, is brought to you by Horseplayers.com, the official online qualifying site of the Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge (BCBC) and National Horseplayers Championship (NHC).
