The 73rd running of the Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes is not only a race on the Road to the Kentucky Derby points series, it kicks off the Louisiana Derby prep season at Fair Grounds. Twelve 3-year olds, many entering the race off wins or runner-up finishes, signed up. A quintet have run well in stakes recently, led by Louisiana Juvenile Stakes winner Saint's Fan, a race for Louisiana-breds only.

If you’re 60 years old or older you might faintly recall the long-ago days when racetracks offered just nine races a day – with no simulcasting – with only win, place and show wagering and perhaps a daily double to start the card.

These days, there’s no shortage of races to bet on from tracks around the world and an abundance of different ways to wager on them.

Welcome to Los Ponies Longshots! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras – Los Ponies to those who follow him on Twitter – will provide two or three longshots at 8-to-1 odds or better on the morning line that he identifies as strong value bets. Contreras also will map out a betting strategy for how to play his selections and keep track of his return on investment (ROI).

Stop back each week if you love a longshot!
