all in Gambling

There are less than two weeks left until the first Saturday in May rolls around and the starting gates pop open for America’s greatest and most famous horse race. That means time is running out on fashioning a way to spend Kentucky Derby day chasing some gargantuan payoffs with your friends in a fun and interactive manner.

Basic Action: The show wager is a bet that appeals to a lot of players who are new to racing and looking to minimize their initial risk. When you bet to show, you win if the horse you bet on finishes first, second OR third. Show payouts are significantly lower than those for win bets and sometimes much lower than place bets. I call the show bet, "horse racing's version of insurance" and it's a fun way to get "action" in a race, without needing the horse you select to finish first or even second.

There’s an old racetrack adage that “time only matters when you’re in jail.”

Clearly, anyone who espouses that philosophy does not appreciate the value of speed figures.

Speed figures are one of the most valuable, yet misunderstood, tools for a handicapper.

While some might view them as complex, they are actually quite logical and remove much of the mystery and work from comparing times at different distances by creating a universal rating system that works equally well with horses in Grade 1 stakes or in $5,000 claiming races.

One of the enduring puzzles for handicappers at the racetrack is how to assess horses who have never raced before, or “first-time starters.” Most handicappers live and die by their ability to divine how a horse will perform based on past performance. With first time starters, there are no past performances to judge. How, then, should we play races with one or more horses making their debut on the racetrack?

Welcome to Los Ponies Longshots! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras – Los Ponies to those who follow him on Twitter – will provide two or three longshots at 8-to-1 odds or better on the morning line that he identifies as strong value bets. Contreras also will map out a betting strategy for how to play his selections and keep track of his return on investment (ROI).

Stop back each week if you love a longshot!

Saturday, Race 9, Santa Anita Park, 7:30 p.m. ET
