Being a 5-year-old maiden is usually strike one against a horse.

A perception that the horse is a money-burner is strike two.

The count on Pure of Spirit stood no balls, two strikes as she came to the plate, er, starting gate on March 15 for the 10th race at Gulfstream Park. The 5-year-old mare owned a 0-for-5 record with three straight runner-up finishes, and a third-place finish before that rash of seconditis.

America’s Best Racing and DerbyJackpot team up to provide horseplayers with their best bets of the weekend in a regular feature blog that will run on Fridays.

Each week, one of our crack handicappers - Jose Contreras, Dan Tordjman, Victoria Garofalo or Cory Moelis – will provide at least one “Best Bet” of the weekend, ideal for a win bet.

The post also will include some combination of additional bets for the weekend.

I’ve read a lot of horse racing books over the years. I prefer the books about the history of racing and gambling, but today I’ll share with you some of the books about handicapping that I think helped my own game as I was learning how to bet the ponies.

The one caveat here is that, just as if you asked 10 people at the track what horse they like in a race, you’re likely to get a lot of different and conflicting opinions about this stuff.

After being postponed from President’s Day, the $300,000, Grade 3 Southwest Stakes was rescheduled for Sunday at Oaklawn Park and the 1 1/16-mile race drew 11 3-year-olds competing for a total of 17 qualifying points for the 2015 Kentucky Derby, with 10 points will be awarded to the winner.

The Rainbow Pick 6 Jackpot at Gulfstream Park may not be as elusive as it was a year ago, but don’t expect any complaints from the folks fortunate enough to hit it and enjoy financial bliss.

The jackpot was cracked for the third time since Jan. 14 when another wise handicapper had the lone winning ticket and took down more than a quarter of a million dollars - $273,869.92 to be precise – off Gulfstream’s Feb. 5 card.
