Atone

Atone started his career with a pair of unplaced finishes but the lightbulb went on during his third race as he rolled to a 13-length runaway win on Sept. 11, 2020 at Arlington International Racecourse. Later that year — in late fall-early winter of his 3-year-old season — Atone posted back-to-back wins on the turf course at Tampa Bay Downs.

In his 4-year-old bow, Atone was unplaced in the Grade 3 Tampa Bay Stakes Feb. 6, 2021, but he atoned and amassed two wins, two seconds, and two thirds in his seven subsequent starts during the campaign, which included a runner-up finish in the Grade 2 Ft. Lauderdale Stakes in December at Gulfstream Park.

The Into Mischief gelding’s first start of 2022 came in the $982,300 Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational Stakes presented by Baccarat Jan. 29 at Gulfstream Park, where he finished fourth, beaten by 1 ¾ lengths by winner Colonel Liam. Trainer Mike Maker kept Atone in elite competition as he ran fourth in the Grade 1 Maker's Mark Mile Stakes in April at Keeneland, third in the Grade 3 Dinner Party Stakes May 21 at Pimlico Race Course, and second in the Grade 3 Forbidden Apple Stakes in July at Saratoga Race Course. Following a close third in an allowance-optional claiming race in August at Saratoga, Atone finished second to Somelikeithotbrown in the one-mile WinStar Mint Million Stakes Sept. 10 at Kentucky Downs.

Atone followed with an unplaced finish in the Grade 1 Coolmore Turf Mile Stakes in October at Keeneland before he closed out his 2022 season with a front-running 3 ½-length romp in an allowance-optional claiming race Nov. 10 at Aqueduct.

After knocking on the door so often with four previous placings in graded stakes races, Atone put it all together at an opportune time with a hard-fought win over a game Ivar in the $1 million Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational Stakes Presented by Qatar Racing Jan. 28, 2023, at Gulfstream Park.
