Purchased for $5,500 at the Ocala Breeders' Sale in June of 2021, California Angel made her career debut in a maiden special weight race at Kentucky Downs on Sept. 8, 2021. She made a last-to-first rally to win at 28.20-1.

After a third-place finish in allowance optional claiming company at Churchill Downs next out, California Angel stepped up in class for the Grade 2 JPMorgan Jessamine Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 13. In an exciting finish, she once again came from behind to score a 17.80-1 upset. That win ensured her a spot in the starting gate for the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile FIllies Turf at Del Mar on Nov. 5, as part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" series.
In the Juvenile Fillies Turf, California Angel had a tough trip from the far outside post position, and ended up eleventh, albeit beaten just four lengths.
