Campaign finished second in his career debut at Saratoga on Sept. 3, 2017, and then did not race again until July of his 3-year-old season. He switched to turf after one race in 2018 and won twice during Kentucky Downs' short fall meet, but then was unplaced in a Grade 3 turf stakes at Keeneland.

The son of Curlin owned by Woodford Racing then was transferred from trainer Steve Asmussen to John Sadler and sent to California. Returning to dirt, he won an allowance optional claiming race on Feb. 3 at Santa Anita Park and then finished fourth in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap Presented by San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino on April 6. Sadler wheeled his colt right back to run in the Grade 3 Tokyo City Cup Stakes on April 14, and Campaign responded with a breakthrough graded stakes victory, defeating favored Beach View by 3 1/4 lengths.
Sadler next sent Campaign to New York for the Woodford Reserve Brooklyn Invitational Stakes on June 8 at Belmont Park, where he finished fourth. He returned for Del Mar's summer meet in the Grade 3 Cougar II Handicap on July 24, and ground out a one-length victory over Itsinthepost, the second graded stakes win of his career.
