Gear Jockey

A homebred for historic Calumet Farm, Gear Jockey was graded stakes-placed twice as a 2-year-old. In his stakes debut, he finished third in the Dixiana Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 6, 2019. He followed that performance with a third-place finish in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Presented by Coolmore America on Nov. 1. 

Despite those performances, Gear Jockey was still a maiden. He did not win his first race until Jan. 21, 2021, when he won a maiden special weight event at Gulfstream Park by half a length.

A few months later, Gear Jockey won his first graded stakes race. In the Grade 3 FanDuel Turf Sprint Stakes at Kentucky Downs on Sept. 11, he rated off the lead early, then hit the front at the top of the stretch and held on for the victory. With that win, Gear Jockey earned a place in the starting gate for the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar on Nov. 6, where he subsequently finished sixth.

Gear Jockey was winless in six races as a 5-year-old in 2022, but he did pick up a third place finish that year in the Grade 2 Shakertown Stakes at Keeneland on April 9, 2022.

Gear Jockey would return to his best form at the site of his greatest career success when he would return to Kentucky Downs as a 6-year-old and win the Grade 2, $1 million Ainsworth Turf Sprint Stakes on Sept. 9, 2023. Gear Jockey raced prominently pressing the pace throughout the six-furlong race, then took over the lead in deep stretch and held off a cavalry charge of late challengers to win by a head. The Ainsworth Turf Sprint was a Breeders' Cup Challenge series win and you're in race, and with his victory, Gear Jockey secured a spot in the starting gate for the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint on Nov. 4 at Santa Anita.
