Get Smokin

Get Smokin, a Get Stormy gelding owned by the Mary Abeel Sullivan Revocable Trust and trained by Thomas Bush, won his second career start at Belmont Park in a one-mile turf race by a length and began 2020 with two second-place finishes and one third-place finish in stakes races at Gulfstream Park. During the summer, he notched another runner-up finish in a stakes race, this time finishing behind heavy favorite Decorated Invader in the Grade 2 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes at Saratoga.

After finishing last of eight in the Saratoga Derby Invitational Stakes, Get Smokin turned his form around in a big way by taking the Oct. 18 Grade 2 Hill Prince Stakes on yielding turf at Belmont Park, besting familiar foe and odds-on favorite Decorated Invader by a head.

In his final start as a 3-year-old, Get Smokin set the pace in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby and led into deep stretch at 30.40-1 odds but faded just a bit late and finished fourth, beaten by three-quarters of a length by winner Domestic Spending.

Get Smokin made his 4-year-old debut in the Grade 3 Tampa Bay Stakes Feb. 6, 2021, and stalked pacesetter Proven Strategies in the 1 1/16-mile race. He seized command nearing the top of the stretch and opened a clear advantage before holding off the late rush of fast-closing Eons to prevail. He picked up another stakes win in the Seek Again Stakes at Belmont on May 22, going gate-to-wire as the lone speed on paper. he made his final start of 2021 with a fifth-place finish in the Grade 3 Poker Stakes at Belmont Park on June 20.

Get Smokin returned to the race for his 5-year-old campaign with an attempt to repeat in the Grade 3 Tampa Bay Stakes, but settled for a second-place finish Feb. 5, 2022 at Tampa Bay Downs. That turned out to be his best finish in six outings in 2022, which also included a runner-up finish in the Grade 3 Arlington Stakes on June 4 at Churchill Downs.

Get Smokin added another couple of Graded stakes in-the-money finishes during his 6-year-old season during 2023, including another second-place finish in the Grade 3 Arlington Stakes on June 3 at Churchill Downs and then a second-place finish in the Grade 2 Wise Dan Stakes on July 1 at Ellis Park.

Following a fourth-place finish in the Kentucky Downs Preview Turf Cup Stakes at Ellis Park on Aug. 6, Get Smokin was sent to Kentucky Downs for what would be his career-best victory in his next race when he was victorious in the Grade 2 $1.7 million FanDuel Kentucky Cup Turf Stakes on Sept. 9. Sent off as a 19-1 longshot in a 12-horse field in the Kentucky Cup, Get Smokin was sent right to the front to establish a solo comfortable lead by jockey Fernando De La Cruz and never faced a serious challenge for the entirety of the 1 1/2-mile race en route to a wire-to-wire victory.

Following an eight-month layoff, Get Smokin returned from the sidelines with a fourth-place finish on the all-weather surface at Woodbine on June 1, 2024 in the Grade 2 Eclipse Stakes. In his following start, however, Get Smokin got back on the grass and got back into the winner's circle with a victory atop an 11-horse field in the Grade 2 $600,000 United Nations Stakes going 1 3/8 miles at Monmouth Park on July 20 when he went wire-to-wire and held on by a nose to win a three-way photo finish.

Get Smokin added another victory when he took the Grade 3 $135,000 bet365 Valedictory Stakes going 1 1/2 miles on the all-weather track at Woodbine on Dec. 7, topping a 10-horse field by a 3 3/4-length winning margin.

Get Smokin is out of the winning Smoke Glacken mare Hookah Lady and is from the family of champion and Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Dayatthespa.
