A Shadwell Stable homebred half-brother (same dam [mother], different sire [father]) to Grade 1-winning sprinter Takaful, Haikal ran second by a neck in his career debut before winning a maiden race by a neck on Dec. 15 at Aqueduct.. He closed from off the pace to win the seven-eighths of a mile Jimmy Winkfield Stakes by a neck in his stakes debut on Feb. 9.

Making his graded stakes debut in the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes and stretching out to a mile for the first time, Haikal closed from well off the pace to reel in Mind Control, Instagrand, and Much Better in deep stretch en route to a convincing victory.
That win gave Haikal 50 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, and he earned 20 more with a late-closing third in the April 6 Wood Memorial Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets.
Haikal competed three times as a 4-year-old, losing an allowance optional claiming race by a nose, then missing the board in two graded stakes races. On Apr. 3, 2021, Haikal finished second in the Grade 3 Excelsior Stakes at Aqueduct, closing from off a slow pace to do so.
