Prince Abama (IRE)

Prince Abama opened his career in Ireland but was transferred to the southern California barn of trainer Phil D'Amato after just one start. Her first stateside race was as a 3-year-old at Del Mar on Aug. 21, 2021, and she broke her maiden two races later back at Del Mar on Oct. 20.

Prince Abama opened his 4-year-old campaign with a fourth-place finish against allowance optional claimers at Santa Anita on Feb. 2, 2022, and afterwards was subsequently placed on the shelf for seven months. He made her return to the races on Sept. 10 a triumphant one back again on his favorite course at Del Mar, winning yet another allowance optional claimer on the grass.

After another allowance win, it was time for Prince Abama to try stakes competition for the first time and did so with a solid third-place finish in the Grade 2 City of Hope Mile Stakes at Santa Anita on Oct. 1. He ended October with another stakes placing when second in the Lure Stakes at Santa Anita on Oct. 29.

Prince Abama earned his first stakes win back at Del Mar on Nov. 25 when he won the Grade 2 $250,000 Hollywood Turf Cup by three-quarters of a length atop a field of seven. He ran the 1 1/2-mile distance in a winning time of 2:29.42 and paid $7.60 to win. The victory extended Prince Abama's record at Del Mar to 3 wins and 1 second in 4 career outs "where the turf meets the surf." His record at other locales (mainly Santa Anita) is 0-for-6.

Prince Abama finished a solid fourth in his final start of 2022, the Grade 2 San Gabriel Stakes at Santa Anita. He found the winner’s circle for the fourth time in his career – and first time away from Del Mar – in his 5-year-old debut, rallying furiously under Flavien Prat to just get up and win the Grade 3 San Marcos Stakes at Santa Anita on Feb. 5.

Prince Abama was bred in Ireland by the sire Tamayuz out of the mare Abama Lady by Mr. Greeley.
