Promise Keeper

Promise Keeper broke his maiden impressively in his second career start, at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 6, 2021. He battled for the lead in the early stages, then drew off in the stretch to win by five lengths.  Luis Saez had the mount, for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Off that effort, he was well-supported in the Grade 2 Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby on Mar. 6, going off at 4-1. However, he stopped badly and finished last.

Undeterred, he won a first-level allowance optional claiming race at Keeneland by 5 1/2 lengths on Apr. 8. He stalked the pace early on in the 1 1/8-mile race, then drew off going away.

In his next start, Promise Keeper was the 1.50-1 favorite in the Grade 3 Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park. He rated off the early pace, then drew clear in the stretch and held off the challenge of Nova Rags to win his first graded stakes race.

Promise Keeper sold for $160,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in 2019. He's sired by Constitution, out of the Curlin mare Mira Alta.
