Sail By

Sail By, a 2-year-old filly by Australian-bred sire Astern, won her debut at odds of 28-1 on June 18, 2021, at Belmont Park. She scored by 1 ½ lengths in a six-furlong turf sprint and was kept at sprint distances for her next two starts. Trainer Leah Gyarmati sent her to Monmouth Park for her stakes debut in the listed Colleen Stakes on Aug. 1, and Sail By finished second. She then started in the P.G. Johnson Stakes at Saratoga on Sept. 2, which was rained off the turf, and set a contested pace before giving up the lead and finishing third by 1 ½ lengths in the six-furlong race.

For her fourth start, Gyarmati stretched Sail By out to 1 1/16 miles and elevated her to the graded stakes level. The filly was sent off at odds of 12-1 against a compact but quality field in the Grade 2 Miss Grillo Stakes at Belmont Park on Oct. 2, and she tracked longshot pacesetter Charlee O early on in second.

Jockey Junior Alvarado angled Sail By out in coming out of the far turn, and the filly took over the lead in early stretch. She withstood a late challenge by Kinchen and scored her first stakes win, and second overall win in four starts, by a length.
