Speak of the Devil (FR)

Speak of the Devil showed quality early in her career in her native France when finishing second by a nose in the 2020 Emirates Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (French One Thousand Guineas) at Deauville in her third career start. She closed out her 3-year-old season with a stakes win at Longchamp during a campaign in which she won once and finished second three times in six starts. The Wootton Bassett filly added a pair of stakes wins in 2021 and finished third, beaten by a head by Mother Earth, in the Group 1 Prix Rothschild.

Transferred to trainer Chad Brown in the United States for her 5-year-old season, Speak of the Devil unleased an eye-catching turn of foot on the final turn in the Grade 2 Longines Churchill Distaff Turf Mile in her stateside debut. She completed a last-to-first rally to post a scintillating 2 ¾-length win in the Distaff Turf Mile on the May 7 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve undercard.

In her second U.S. start, Speak of the Devil finished a disappointing fourth of five starters in the Grade 1 Longines Just a Game Stakes June 11 at Belmont Park, a race won by stablemate Regal Glory.

Peter Brant purchased the mare for over $2.2 million at the Arqana December 2021 breeding stock sale in France before moving her across the Atlantic.
