Sugoi became a graded stakes winner in his 27th career start when he scored by 1 ¼ lengths in the Grade 3 Louisville Stakes, a 1 ½-mile turf race, May 18, 2024, at Churchill Downs. The Karakontie gelding had amassed a solid record of nine wins through his first 26 career starts, competing on dirt, turf, and all-weather surfaces, but had finished no better than fourth in his three prior stakes appearances.

Trainer Mike Maker claimed Sugoi out of a neck victory racing 1 1/16 miles on dirt at Keeneland in April 2024, which had followed two very close wins on Turfway Park’s all-weather track earlier in his 7-year-old season. Sugoi was handled perfectly on the front end by Julien Leparoux in his breakthrough Louisville Stakes score.
Sugoi showed that he is a horse that just keeps getting better with age. He returned to begin his 8-year-old season on Jan. 25, 2025, in the $200,000 John B. Connolly Turf Cup Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park and was able to gut-out a nose win atop an 11-horse field.
