Weyburn

In his third career start, Weyburn broke through for a maiden win at Aqueduct on Dec. 5, 2020. He got in a speed duel early on, but maintained the advantage and pulled clear in the stretch, crossing the finish line 1 1/2 lengths in front. He covered 7 furlongs on a sloppy track in 1:25.59.

Trainer Jimmy Jerkens next opted to test him on the 2021 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve trail in the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes March 6 at Aqueduct. He stalked pacesetter Freedom Fighter early before both were passed in the stretch by Crowded Trade, however Weyburn fought back tenaciously. Crowded Trade and Weyburn battled stride for stride the length of the stretch with Weyburn pushing his nose in front in the closing strides to win a thriller at 46.75-1 odds.

The Gotham victory earned Weyburn 50 points toward qualifying for the Derby, virtually guaranteeing his spot in the starting gate for the run for the roses May 1 at Churchill Downs.

In his next start, Weyburn finished fourth in the Grade 2 Wood Memorial Stakes Presented by Resorts World Casino on Apr. 3, after rating near the pace.

After the Wood Memorial, Weyburn finished second in the Grade 3 TVG.com Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park on June 13, behind Kentucky Derby  and TVG.com Haskell Stakes winner Mandaloun.

Weyburn was well-beaten in his next two starts, and went to the sidelines for the final few months of his 3-year-old season. He returned to the races with a 2 1/2-length victory in the Sir Shackleton Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Apr. 2.

Out of the A.P. Indy mare Sunday Affair, Weyburn is a half-brother to multiple graded stakes winner Yorkton.
