Whatmakessammyrun won his second career start in October 2020, taking a seven-furlong turf sprint at Belmont Park by a dominant 8 ½ lengths. He was elevated to stakes company for his next start and finished third in the Atlantic Beach Stakes, and then raced in Florida into early 2021 before he was moved to trainer Mark Glatt’s barn in California.

The We Miss Artie gelding won his first two starts for Glatt at Santa Anita Park, the second of those in the listed Desert Code Stakes. Whatmakessammyrun then was shipped around the country over the next year and a half with returns to California, but he could not break through with another victory, finishing second once in a Del Mar allowance optional claiming race in August 2022 and failing to hit the board in four stakes races.

That recent form made him a 18-1 longshot in the Grade 2 Eddie D Stakes Oct. 1 at Santa Anita. With Joe Bravo aboard, Whatmakessammyrun rallied strongly through the stretch and held a couple of late challenges at bay to win the race over the downhill turf by three quarters of a length and improve his career record to 4-for-14.

Whatmakessammyrun is out of the winning Touch Gold mare Reggae Rose, and is a half-brother (same dam [mother], different sire [father]) to two-time Grade 3 winner and $500,000 earner Shakhimat. Champion turf female Perfect Sting is another notable relative.
