Ben Curtis, a native of Ireland, built a career riding in his home country, in England, and in the Middle East during the 2010s but in 2023 decided to embark on a new challenge and moved to Fair Grounds in New Orleans, La., to ride during its 2023-24 meet, which corresponded to the off-season in British and Irish racing when turf racecourses are closed.
Ben Curtis, a native of Ireland, built a career riding in his home country, in England, and in the Middle East during the 2010s but in 2023 decided to embark on a new challenge and moved to Fair Grounds in New Orleans, La., to ride during its 2023-24 meet, which corresponded to the off-season in British and Irish racing when turf racecourses are closed.
Curtis found immediate success, finishing the Fair Grounds meet ranked fourth in wins and 10th in earnings among jockeys. He decided to remain in the U.S. with plans to compete on the Mid-Atlantic circuit during summer 2024.
In the meantime, however, Curtis secured his first mount in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve aboard Honor Marie, a colt he piloted to a runner-up finish in the Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds.
