Cristian Torres, a native of Puerto Rico, began his career as a jockey in 2019 and had initial success at Gulfstream Park while an apprentice. He then moved to compete on the Midwest circuit and finished the 2022 Remington Park meet as the leading jockey in both wins and earnings.

During 2022-23, Torres rose to the top rank of jockeys at the competitive Oaklawn Park meet, becoming the fastest jockey to reach the $1 million mark in earnings during a race meet at the Arkansas track in early January 2023. A few weeks later, he notched his first career stakes win when riding Last Samurai to victory in the Grade 3 Razorback Handicap on Feb. 18 for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas.
