After working as a bloodstock agent and also claiming several horses, Erik Asmussen began his riding career in 2024 and won his first race on Jan. 5 at Sam Houston Race Park. The 22-year-old son of Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen enjoyed success quickly, finishing the spring-summer season at Lone Star Park atop the riders’ standings in wins with 48.
Asmussen then moved to other tracks including Churchill Downs and continued to rack up wins, finishing sixth in Churchill’s fall meet among jockeys with 12 wins.

At the end of his first year in the saddle, Asmussen led all apprentice jockeys with 127 wins and $5,078,150 in earnings. On Jan. 23, 2025, he received the Eclipse Award as Outstanding Apprentice Jockey for 2024.
Asmussen’s uncle, Cash, won an Eclipse Award as an apprentice rider in 1979. His older brother Keith is also an emerging jockey on the Midwest circuit.
