Starting as a hot walker, Johnson climbed the ladder
in trainer Gary Hartlage's operation to groom, exercise rider and
on to stable jockey. The Philpot, Ky., native began working for
Hartlage after he finished high school and rode his first race for
the barn in 1989. Johnson is based in Louisville and is a regular
on the Kentucky-Oaklawn circuit. He is active in the mornings as an
exercise rider and has been aboard Hartlage's top horses through
the years.
