Luca Panici, a native of Italy, began his riding career in his home country in 1990. He won over 500 races in Europe and in the late 1990s traveled to the U.S. during the Italian racing offseason to gallop horses in south Florida for Christophe Clement and Bill Mott.
Luca Panici, a native of Italy, began his riding career in his home country in 1990. He won over 500 races in Europe and in the late 1990s traveled to the U.S. during the Italian racing offseason to gallop horses in south Florida for Christophe Clement and Bill Mott.
Panici moved to Florida to ride full-time in 2005 and won his first race on Nov. 25 at then-named Calder Race Course (now Gulfstream Park West). He subsequently moved back to Italy for a few years, but returned to Florida in 2009. Panici won his first graded stakes in 2012, taking the Grade 3 Azalea Stakes aboard Another Romance.
In early 2020, Panici made headlines as the jockey for Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve contender Sole Volante, winner of the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes.
Panici comes from a family steeped in Italian racing, and is the son of successful 1970s-era jockey Vittorio Panici.
