Russell A. Baze

Russell Baze has put together a remarkable career that spans more than 40 years and five decades. Baze is the all-time leading North American rider by victories with more than 12,700 and his mounts have earned more than $198 million.

Baze was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 1999 and was honored with a special Eclipse Award in 1995 for being the first jockey ever to win 400 or more races in a year for four consecutive years.

He set a Northern California record for most victories on a single card when he won with seven of his nine mounts at Golden Gate Fields on April 16, 1992. He won four graded stakes with the brilliantly fast Lost in the Fog in 2005 and 2006.

Baze comes from a family of horsemen, including his father, Joe, who won riding championships at Bay Meadows, Golden Gate Fields and Longacres before becoming a trainer. His younger brother Dale was a jockey but has retired and is now an exercise rider. Cousin Gary Baze is a Washington (State) Hall of Fame jockey.

Showing no sign of slowing with age, Baze has led all North American riders by wins eight times since 2000. He finished fifth by winners in 2015.
