all in Aftercare

August was a month of never-ending trouble. When we last left off, Fin was just beginning her stall rest journey and, in total, it lasted for almost four weeks! She blew an abscess from her right front coronary band and I thought we were in the clear. The weather forecast called for rain the next few days, so to be safe I thought I would keep her up until the weather had passed.

America’s Best Racing’s Fan Choice Awards returns for 2022 better than ever with exciting, fresh categories and a sweepstakes that will whisk one lucky fan and a guest to a marquee race of their choosing. Also new for 2022, America’s Best Racing will make a donation on behalf of each Fan Choice Awards winner to a horse-racing related charity of their choosing.

September is always my favorite month of the year. It helps that it’s my birth month, but I always find something magical about the leaves changing and a cool breeze finally making its way to the Bluegrass to stay. This year has been no different, and with it, I have found myself more hopeful and excited about the Thoroughbred Makeover than I previously had been.

Somehow, in the blink of an eye nine months have passed. When I think back on our first rides this winter over snow-covered muddy ground, it feels both like yesterday and like a faraway memory all at the same time. When I sat down to write this last pre-Makeover blog I had plans to detail our last two shows and map out our final 30 days of preparation but instead, I found myself truly overcome with emotion as I think back on what this journey has been like and the big takeaways that I have learned. So I hope you will indulge me a bit for this month’s blog.

Ever since I was a little girl, I have always wanted to show at the Virginia Horse Center. It’s about two hours away from our town and such a beautiful facility. I was so excited to discover that the Virginia Starter Horse Trials were being held there and offered just dressage tests in addition to the horse trials. Fin had conquered being stalled last month, but I also did not want Kentucky to be her first overnight show experience. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to get Fin in a bigger environment, practice our dressage tests, and practice our traveling skills!
