I am honored and very excited to be a part of the Thoroughbred Makeover this year as a trainer! This year is totally different for me since, I chose my horse for all the things he isn’t… and if that seems confusing, let me explain!

My name is Meghan McNamara. I am an amateur all-arounder from Austin, Texas with a broad focus in the Western disciplines and a side hobby in Hunter-Jumpers. I’m thrilled to be training my mare, Pied N True, aka “Pied,” for the 2021 Thoroughbred Makeover.

Well, it’s been a bit since we have updated everyone at America’s Best Racing on our progress to the Thoroughbred Makeover for the class of 2020!  Mr. Park and I have been quite busy this last month and have much to share!

We made the journey to Aiken, S.C., at the beginning of February for our winter trip. I have been down from February through middle of April for the last few years and have really enjoyed being able to train the horses during the time when Nebraska winters can be quite brutal. The day I left, the “feels like” temp was 40 degrees below zero, for a reference.

An eight-week study of patients with posttraumatic stress disorder who participated in equine-assisted therapy found evidence at the neurobiological level that such programs are effective in treating the ailment, which may occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a harrowing event.

When 2004 Belmont and Travers Stakes winner Birdstone arrived at Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Facility in Georgetown, Ky., after 15 years as a stallion at Gainesway Farm, it took him longer than most retirees to the farm to get acclimated.

Old Friends founder Michael Blowen said most stallions run the fence a few times in their new paddock, settle in, and get used to the good life of a steady stream of carrots. But Birdstone, a 19-year-old by Grindstone, was plagued by anxiety during his first week at Old Friends.
