September is always my favorite month of the year. It helps that it’s my birth month, but I always find something magical about the leaves changing and a cool breeze finally making its way to the Bluegrass to stay. This year has been no different, and with it, I have found myself more hopeful and excited about the Thoroughbred Makeover than I previously had been.

The horse racing spotlight in North America shifts north of the border this upcoming weekend to Woodbine in Toronto, Ontario, where three Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” preps are scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 17.

The sensory system is more than just the physical senses identifying stimulus in the environment, it is the horses’ psyche managing the interpretive process. A “sensory sound” horse has the capacity to identify, interpret, and respond purposely in a controlled manner.

Somehow, in the blink of an eye nine months have passed. When I think back on our first rides this winter over snow-covered muddy ground, it feels both like yesterday and like a faraway memory all at the same time. When I sat down to write this last pre-Makeover blog I had plans to detail our last two shows and map out our final 30 days of preparation but instead, I found myself truly overcome with emotion as I think back on what this journey has been like and the big takeaways that I have learned. So I hope you will indulge me a bit for this month’s blog.

Eric DeCoster has it. That spark of his says something to the effect, I know where I am headed. DeCoster’s burning desire is to be an equine-industry sponge. When you talk to him, you realize, that this 20-year-old is wild about Thoroughbred racing, but with an inspired purpose.
