Horse racing coverage for the upcoming week in North America focuses on two major storylines. Several accomplished 3-year-olds return to the track Saturday in the $600,000, Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga.

The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame unveiled to the public on July 14 two new exhibitions, coinciding with opening day of the Saratoga Race Course summer meeting.

Betting on America: The Immigrant Experience and the Hall of Fame debuted in the McBean Gallery, while Jim Raftery: A Turfotos Retrospective (from the collection of Barbara D. Livingston) opened in the von Stade Gallery.

The past month has been a whirlwind of summer activities, and I am surprised that we have made it through. After Fin got her new saddle, my brother got married, we started the process of drilling a well on the farm, and I went on a family vacation. Luckily, even though the time has felt limited, we have still been able to make some solid progress on Fin’s training.

Arguably the biggest weekend of July on the North American horse racing calendar is coming up, featuring a marquee race for 3-year-olds at Monmouth Park that also serves as a “Win and You’re In” for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic, the second weekend of one of the two premier summer race meets in the U.S., and the opening weekend for the other.

This week marks one of the annual high points of the racing calendar, the payoff to weeks if not months of anticipation for hardcore racing fans: the opening of Saratoga Race Course’s summer meet.
