The first weekend of April is usually a big one in the world of North American horse racing and this year is no different, with three 170-point prep races for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve on the schedule for Saturday, April 2.

It’s a 20-hour round-trip journey from Wytheville, Va., to Troy, N.Y. As it turns out, that’s also the perfect amount of time to impulse purchase a horse.

The eyes of the racing world were on Meydan for the 2022 Dubai World Cup day. Some of the world's top horse squared off for millions of dollars in purses in the United Arab Emirates. It was a big day for Japan-based horses, who won five races on the program. The team at Eclipse Sportswire was on hand to capture the great racing action.

Patrick O’Neill, nephew to two-time Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Doug O’Neill and bloodstock agent Dennis O’Neill, had a different interest from most college kids when he was an undergraduate student and a member of Brown University’s football team. He insisted on adding TVG to the fraternity house’s cable television package; he was the one who watched horse racing at every opportunity, including in class and in film study prior to practice.

Tom Pedulla is interviewing prominent owners, trainers and jockeys as they travel the Road to the 148th Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve on May 7 at Churchill Downs.
