Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation and WinStar Farm announced today that WinStar will be the official sponsor of The WinStar-Grayson #GivingTuesday Challenge, to be held on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017.

Kassie Guglielmino steps out of the jockey’s room at Portland Meadows and sees a friend. She smiles a smile that is bright enough to light up the gloomy Pacific Northwest skies. She watches the horses as they are saddled, looks outside to see if it’s raining yet and heads to her mount. As they leave through the tunnel on their way to the track, her hand automatically reaches up to touch the beam overhead.  On it someone has written “Luck” with a couple of horseshoes. It’s primitive and rustic.

What is your destiny in life? Is it where you started? Is it how you planned? How do you know what road to follow? For the team of folks involved with Indiana-bred Bucchero at the 2017 Breeders’ Cup, their journey has been astonishing. Trainer Tim Glyshaw was a school teacher.

Del Mar, the host track for this year’s Breeders Cup World Championships, was built in 1937 and has a colorful and star-studded history. It was an extremely popular hangout for celebrities in its heyday and continues to be one of the country’s most exciting and glamourous racetracks to this day.

But late at night, after all of the fans have gone home, the revelry doesn’t stop. Some say that’s just when the party gets started at Del Mar … because that’s when the the ghosts come out to play.

When I first moved to New York back in 1999, I started dating a beautiful girl from Staten Island, the daughter of two wealthy lawyers, a brilliant scholar with a bright future in law ahead of herself.

She was funny, whip-smart, good looking and rich. I felt like I had hit a home run. But one day while we were walking down 7th Avenue past the flagship OTB (Off-Track-Betting) parlor, where the Winner’s Circle Restaurant was, we saw a man exiting the place with a little boy, maybe 6 or 7 years old, holding his hand.
