D. Whitworth “Whit” Beckman has been a trainer since 2021. He’s sent out a modest 220 starters in the interim and owns 29 wins with earnings of $2.6 million through June 4. But when it comes to major New York stakes, he knows as well as anyone what goes into developing the kind of horses who win those races.

With a last name that is well known in racing and commands respect, Gabrielle “Gabby” Migliore is the latest member of her family to launch a career in the industry. Migliore, 22, started working for the New York Racing Association as an assistant in the horsemen’s relations department in July 2023. Two months later, she landed a position at NYRA as the administrator of the veterinary department.

August Belmont Sr. treasured stamina and bred his horses accordingly. When he and partner Leonard Jerome founded their New York racetrack in 1866, Belmont wanted to add a long-distance stakes, one that celebrated stamina in 3-year-olds. To that end, he inaugurated the 1 5/8-mile Belmont Stakes in June 1867, the sophomore test at Jerome Park soon becoming a traditional test of endurance.

Michelle Babbie invested in Preakness Stakes winner Seize the Grey because she was drawn to the name of his dam, Smart Shopping. Will Diaz felt the son of Arrogate represented a shot worth taking due to his trainer, D. Wayne Lukas. Kerri Herlick saw it as a fun way to spend unexpected money.

The 2024 Triple Crown season is about to wrap up with a major change in the normal schedule.
