One seemingly small action can be a catalyst for greater change. Take Abijah's on the Backside, a fledgling aftercare and therapy organization based within the walls of Canterbury Park's shed rows that is fueled by a desire to help retired racehorses recover and transition, with an equal emphasis on helping humans do the same.

Horse racing has no shortage of dynasties. From the glory years of Calumet Farm to multi-generational families of trainers and riders, the sport’s history can be told through the continuity of certain names in the list of winners of our great races. Unique amongst these is the Turcotte family of Canadian jockeys.

This year, America’s Best Racing and the Retired Racehorse Project will be sharing diaries from several trainers preparing for the 2023 Thoroughbred Makeover competition, scheduled for Oct. 11-14 at the Kentucky Horse Park. Meet adult amateur rider Julianne Pangal and her RRP hopeful, Funnee, as they gear up for their maiden voyage to the Thoroughbred Makeover.

The story of the sport of horse racing lies in its places: sprawling expanses of bluegrass nourishing generations, stunning mountain vistas watching over their battles, and timeless towns centered around these equine athletes. Summer brings America to one of those timeless towns, Saratoga Springs, N.Y., where the best that the sport has to offer congregate for new editions of long-running fixture races.

The horse racing calendar in North America is now in full midsummer swing, with Saratoga opening last week and the other premier meet of the season, Del Mar, set to launch on Friday, July 21.
