As the calendar turns to late September, the upcoming weekend offers a momentary respite from Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” races before activity picks up with numerous preps scheduled over the next three-plus weeks.

The Road to the 2023 Breeders’ Cup heads north of the border this weekend, with three “Win and You’re In” qualifying preps scheduled Saturday, Sept. 16, at Woodbine in Toronto.

Keeneland Library has scheduled a number of events for the remainder of 2023 to expand the reach of its groundbreaking exhibit, The Heart of the Turf: Racing’s Black Pioneers, which highlights the lives and careers of 80 African Americans working in the Thoroughbred industry from the mid-1800s to the present. Activities include a traveling exhibit, a new book and Breyer model of pioneering Black jockey Cheryl White and an appearance by Pulitzer Prize winner Geraldine Brooks, author of bestseller Horse.

The upcoming weekend in horse racing is highlighted by top-level turf racing at Kentucky Downs and the final days of Del Mar’s summer meet in California. Kentucky Downs will host live racing on Thursday, Sept. 7, Saturday, Sept. 9, and Sunday, Sept. 10, the last of which is also Del Mar’s closing day.

The second annual Horse Racing Women's Summit will feature Reagan Cannon as the event's keynote speaker. An international leadership speaker and coach, Cannon brings more than 20 years of experience from Fortune 15 companies like Amazon and AT&T.

Passionate about women's advancement, she's the author of “The Cure for Career Quicksand” and presented a TEDx talk titled, “The Real Reason Women Aren't Promoted.” The following Q&A details Cannon’s insights on advancing in male-dominated industries and how her career knowledge lends itself to the world of horse racing.
