The vault! The word “vault” conjures up some great images. When one is at the Kentucky Derby Museum, it’s very easy to wonder, “What else is there?” The imagination can run wild for adults who were once (and still are) horse crazy. Kentucky Derby historians — most fans are in one way or another — can riff on little-known facts about now obscure horses who were once feted as the top 3-year-olds in the country on the first Saturday in May. So when I got the opportunity to visit, I dropped everything and practically galloped to the museum.

While it boasts architectural and historical marvels at virtually every corner, there’s a significant element of New York City where function trumps form. Subway cars, hot-dog carts, pizza joints, and Madison Square Garden — none of these iconic slices of the Apple are particularly pretty. Same with Belmont Park; you want bow ties and buskers, head to Saratoga Race Course.

The Belmont Stakes is always one of the most exciting events on horse racing’s calendar, and this year is extra thrilling since a Triple Crown is on the line with Justify. Add in a sensational group of top races leading up to the main event, and you can bet that Belmont Park is the place to be on June 9.

Welcome to Tacos and Trifectas! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras - @LosPonies to those who follow him on Twitter - will provide a taco review along with a selection that he will key in trifecta bets in hopes of winning some cash to buy more tacos! Contreras will map out a trifecta betting strategy for how to key his main pick and keep track of his return on investment (ROI), which was positive in 2017.

Stop back each week if you love tacos and want a trifecta play!

This year’s Kentucky Derby was like no other because the weather refused to cooperate. Usually the weather prevails during the Derby and the sun can make a brief appearance after the call to the post.  This year, the heavens opened up and it poured rain. It was not just a sprinkle, nor was it a shower. It didn’t mist or drizzle. It out and out poured rain and drenched everything.
