After a weekend in horse racing affected by weather conditions coast to coast, the activity picks back up to a large extent on the upcoming extended holiday weekend, with Fair Grounds hosting a Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve prep race on Saturday, Jan. 18, and several other tracks re-opening.

The first true can’t-miss event of the Thoroughbred racing calendar is approaching like a fast-finishing racehorse closing ground in the stretch, but there is still time to corral tickets to the 2025 Pegasus World Cup Jan. 25 at Gulfstream Park.

A remarkable day of Thoroughbred racing paired with elite hospitality and entertainment, Pegasus World Cup has quickly evolved into one of the marquee race days of the year and 2025 looks especially promising.

The upcoming weekend in North American horse racing is comparatively light in terms of marquee races for January, as there are no Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve preps scheduled and several tracks have cancelled racecards due to weather conditions.

The 2025 racing calendar kicks off in North America with an active New Year’s Day schedule at several tracks around the country and continues on through the weekend, with two Kentucky Derby points preps – the Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park and the Jerome Stakes at Aqueduct – slated for Saturday, Jan. 4.

American Pharoah’s beautiful photo on the cover the June 15, 2015, issue of Sports Illustrated marked only the third time a horse has graced the front of that magazine in the last 23 years since the start of the 21st century.
