After a weekend with only one graded stakes race, the North American horse racing calendar picks back up this upcoming weekend, with Fair Grounds front and center. The New Orleans, La., track holds one of its marquee racecards Saturday, Jan. 21, featuring seven stakes races highlighted by the $200,000, Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes.

A sensational 2022 for horse racing in North America winds down this weekend, and action picks right up as the calendar turns to 2023 on New Year’s Day with a qualifying points race for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve scheduled at Oaklawn Park. The Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Sunday, Jan. 1 offers Derby points to the top five finishers on a 10-4-3-2-1 scale.

As happens annually, horse racing in North America will go “dark” for one day on the calendar as all involved in the sport, from owners to everyday bettors and fans, celebrate Christmas on Sunday, Dec. 25. Most tracks will not conduct racing on Christmas Eve, Saturday, Dec. 24 as well, with Gulfstream Park and Tampa Bay Downs being notable exceptions.
