all in The Life

Louie was a true racetracker. He picked the occasional winner. He watched horses breeze with a keen eye. He knew absolutely everyone at Santa Anita Park’s Clockers’ Corner.

He was also a Labrador retriever.

Pound for pound, jockeys are among the world’s great athletes, packing the power to control a thousand-pound animal into a light frame that balances on a saddle that weighs less than a bag of sugar. Day in and day out, they battle their bodies, the weather, and the inherent risks of riding a horse going 35 to 40 miles per hour to do what they love.

As executive director of The Jockey Club Safety Net Foundation, Shannon Kelly, 33, has served in that capacity since 2018. Her present role at The Jockey Club follows five years as development manager for both the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation and Safety Net Foundation.

The Safety Net Foundation, a charitable trust and 501(c)(3) organization, serves the needs of members of the Thoroughbred industry and their families at racetracks across the United States. More information can be found on its website.

Larry Demeritte used to watch the Kentucky Derby in his native Bahamas and dream the dream. He was a top trainer in his homeland. Perhaps one day he could saddle a horse good enough to run for the roses.

The drive to make that happen led him to come to the United States in the mid-1970s and eventually become a citizen. Although he developed a reputation for having a keen eye for inexpensive horses that far outran their purchase prices, his Derby dream seemed like nothing more than fantasy.

Corbin Blumberg, the director of racing and bloodstock operations for Jack and Laurie Wolf’s Starlight Racing and StarLadies Racing, didn’t have a familial connection to horse racing, but rather his deep love for the equine and riding led him to the industry.
