Eric DeCoster has it. That spark of his says something to the effect, I know where I am headed. DeCoster’s burning desire is to be an equine-industry sponge. When you talk to him, you realize, that this 20-year-old is wild about Thoroughbred racing, but with an inspired purpose.

On opening night at Remington Park in August, Dale Day sits atop his Oklahoma perch. That’s a nest that can be a lonely spot, as Day peers through the binoculars from the announcer’s booth. But Day has his share of company; there are equine athletes hearing his call over the loudspeakers, and every now and then, humans listen as well. Day speaks with an even tone, whether it is one on one or to the multitude. If he needs exhilaration for a stretch run, it’s at the ready.

It's been far from an unusual sight to see three jockeys from the same family competing against each other at Saratoga Race Course this past summer.

Lindsy Reed is very much part of the team that produced one of the great upsets in racing history, 80.80-1 Rich Strike’s emergence in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve. Trainer Eric Reed is assisted by his wife, Kay, and Lindsy, their daughter.
