all in The Life

Beginning in August, horse racing fans, bettors and stakeholders will have a new gathering place to share their love for the sport. The Louisville Thoroughbred Society (LTS) is scheduled to open its doors on Main Street in Louisville, just a 15-minute drive up the road from Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby.

Managing partner Jack Knowlton and his fellow Sackatoga Stable owners stepped out of a yellow school bus at Churchill Downs to gain an upset victory with New York-bred gelding Funny Cide in the 2003 Kentucky Derby. In another unexpected twist, Knowlton and Sackatoga have returned to the national spotlight with another stellar New York-bred.

Every May, on the same date as the Kentucky Derby, one of the nation’s largest steeplechase events takes place in Northern Virginia. As an event that has been run on the first Saturday in May for the past 94 years, the Virginia Gold Cup is considered to be Virginia’s answer to the Kentucky Derby. Having had to cancel the May event in its 95th year due to COVID-19, the Virginia Gold Cup will be held on June 27 without spectators and with limited people on the grounds (participants and essential personnel only). A free livestream of the event will be available.
