The Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands is Saturday, May 6, with television coverage on NBC expected to peak at about 18 million viewers as post time nears for the first jewel of the Triple Crown. By that point most of the viewers will be familiar with most of the horses as well as many of the jockeys and trainers, but there is considerably less written about the owners of the Derby runners.

In the early morning hours at Santa Anita, horses and exercise riders gather at the gap. As they wait, some horses are jumpy and anxious. They swirl and twirl as their rider whirls around to control them. One large, chestnut Thoroughbred stood calmly in the sunlight in front of me. With his left hand holding the reins loosely, the rider’s right hand slowly gave his horse a neck massage. He started at the poll and worked down the bridle path and mane.

Saturday’s Dubai World Cup Festival at Meydan Racecourse brought together racing’s international elite and thousands of fans to celebrate fashion, fireworks, music, and first and foremost, some of the world’s best horse racing.

Super Bowl Sunday was especially exciting for Patchen Wilkes Farm in Lexington, Ky., as they welcomed a new white foal during the second half of the game. The filly was the 13th white foal born on the farm since 1995 in one of the cuter statistical anomalies in horse racing.

Of more than 2.1 million Thoroughbreds registered by The Jockey Club since 1803, 179 have been white. That’s just .000085 percent. To have 13 born at one farm in the span of 22 years would be incredibly unlikely. But Patchen Wilkes isn’t just any farm.
