The conversation usually goes something like this:

Alexa: “I’m a graduate student at the University of Arizona.”

Stranger: “What are you studying?”

Alexa: “I’m in the Race Track Industry Program ... so horse racing.”

Stranger: “You can go to school for horse racing?”

Christmas morning … a time for family, fellowship, generosity and gratitude. For many Americans, it is a time for spiritual celebration. A holiday unlike any other, full of good tidings and cheer and a trip to the racetrack.

Jim Cornes is a lucky man. Lucky to be alive. Lucky to have lived such an incredible life. And he knows it. His eyes often fill with tears as he recollects his journey from a hot walker to the glorious world of international racing and his return to the United States. Through it all, it has always been about the horses.

If I was a ghost unencumbered with family and career responsibilities, I would head straight to Kentucky. What better place to hang out than the Bluegrass state? A Google search reveals that Lexington, Ky. is considered a hot spot for paranormal activity.  There are many websites devoted to Kentucky ghost sightings and experiences.

Oct. 12 is National Farmers Day in the United States, a day that acknowledges some of the hardest working people in the country. In celebration of the day and those who work on farms in horse racing, here are some things to know about farms and what you should know before going to visit them.

1. They are some of the most beautiful places in the world: I swear farms hire the best landscapers around because I’ve never seen a bad looking Thoroughbred farm.
