Bourbon War dazzled in his season debut on Jan. 18 at Gulfstream Park. He closed from off the pace and surged clear to a 2 ¼-length score at Gulfstream Park. Bourbon War showed promise at 2 with a debut win and a fourth-place finish in the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes, but the 107 Equibase Speed Figure he earned in his first start in 2019 showed he had taken a significant step forward.

Returning to graded stakes competition for the Grade 2, $400,000 Xpressbet Fountain of Youth Stakes on March 2, Bourbon War closed with a rush and finished second to Code of Honor with an eye-catching stretch rally. He followed with a fourth-place finish at Gulfstream in the $1 million Xpressbet Florida Derby.
Bourbon War made his next start in the May 18 Preakness Stakes, where he was sent off as the 5.60-1 second betting choice. He raced near the back of the pack through the backstretch and had no late rally, finishing eighth of 13.
