Owendale

Owendale was purchased for $200,000 at the 2017 Keeneland September yearling sale. He finished fourth in his career debut in July 2018 at Ellis Park and third in his second start, also at Ellis, in September.

Owendale earned his first career win in September at Indiana Grand. Stretching out to a mile for the first time, he closed from eighth with a powerful rally to prevail by 1 ¾ lengths. He subsequently finished fourth in an allowance race at Churchill Downs in October before a runner-up finish by a neck in December at Fair Grounds in his final start at two.

The bay Into Mischief colt rated in third early in his 3-year-old bow and pulled away in the stretch to win a one-mile and 70-yard race on Jan. 17 at Fair Grounds. He made his stakes debut in the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes Presented by Lamarque Ford but after a slow start and a wide trip, he never threatened while finishing eighth, beaten by 10 lengths.

Owendale bounced back nicely in his second try against stakes competition, using a sweeping rally on the turn in the Grade 3 Stonestreet Lexington Stakes to seize command in early stretch before holding Anothertwistafate comfortably at bay to post his first stakes win.

Owendale’s connections targeted the Preakness Stakes on May 18 for his next start, and the colt rallied from off the pace under Florent Geroux to finish third behind War of Will in a good effort.

Following the Preakness, Owendale was shipped to Thistledown to start in the Grade 3 Ohio Derby on June 22. He settled well off of the pace and made up ground through the far turn before shooting into contention along the inside at the top of the stretch. Under strong urging from Florent Geroux, Owendale outfinished game runner-up Market King to tally his second graded stakes win of 2019.

Owendale next started in the Grade 1 Runhappy Travers Stakes, and finished fifth in a tightly packed group of horses behind runaway winner Code of Honor. He then put in three swift workouts at Churchill Downs before starting in the Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby on Sept. 29, a race he won by 1 ¾ lengths with a sustained stretch rally under Geroux.

After an unplaced finish in the Breeders' Cup Classic, Owendale closed out his 3-year-old season with a second-place finish behind Tom's d'Etat in the Grade 1 Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs.

Owendale made his 4-year-old debut May 23, 2020, in the Blame Stakes at Churchill Downs and rallied past runner-up Everfast and Silver Dust in the closing strides to prevail despite the layoff of nearly six months. He was graded stakes-placed three more times in 2020.

In his 2021 debut, Owendale finished third in the Grade 3 Razorback Handicap at Oaklawn Park on Feb. 27. Next out, he finished second by a nose in the Grade 2 New Orleans Classic Stakes at Fair Grounds on Mar. 20 as the favorite.

The unraced Bernardini mare Aspen Light is the dam (mother) of Owendale. Aspen Light is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Great Hunter.
