Background, a Khozan gelding, began his racing career at Oaklawn Park in early 2020 and won his second career start there in February. He also finished third in three races during his 3-year-old season at Oaklawn.
Back at Arlington for the start of 2021, Background picked up his second and third career victories – both in allowance races – before being shipped to Arlington Park for its summer meet. He finished second in an allowance race there and then nearly scored his first stakes win on the all-weather track, losing the listed Hanshin Cup by a head.

Trainer Mike Puhich next sent Background to the Pacific Northwest for a start in the Grade 3 Longacres Mile Handicap at Emerald Downs on Aug. 15. With Rocco Bowen riding, the gelding rallied late and defeated local horse Windribbon by a nead, picking up his first stakes win.
