Unplaced in his career debut Dec. 27, 2020 in a sprint at Santa Anita Park, Hockey Dad switched to turf for his second start and won by 2 ¼ lengths Jan. 22 in a three-quarter-mile race. Trainer Doug O’Neill shifted him back to the main track for his second start and Hockey Dad won again, edging away to a 1 ¾-length victory in a three-quarter-mile allowance race for California-breds.
Flashing his versatility, Hockey Dan stretched out to 1 1/16 miles and returned to the grass for his fourth race, and the Nyquist colt won by 1 ¼ lengths to extend his winning streak to three.

From there, Hockey Dad made his stakes debut in the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks on the synthetic Tapeta Footing surface at Turfway Park. While his winning streak came to a halt March 27 at Turfway, Hockey Dad performed admirably in a third-place finish that earned 20 points toward qualifying for the 2021 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve.
Hockey dad’s dam (mother) is Group 3-placed Ann Summers Gold, by Yankee Victor, who produced multiple stakes winner Sprouts and stakes-placed winner Radish.
