After opening his 5-year-old season with consecutive wins, Special Reserve made his graded stakes debut in the Grade 3 Commonwealth Stakes at Keeneland on Apr. 3, 2021. Sent off at 10-1, he led most of the way, but was caught in the last sixteenth by Flagstaff. He just held on for second in a photo finish over Attachment Reserve.
After opening his 5-year-old season with consecutive wins, Special Reserve made his graded stakes debut in the Grade 3 Commonwealth Stakes at Keeneland on Apr. 3, 2021. Sent off at 10-1, he led most of the way, but was caught in the last sixteenth by Flagstaff. He just held on for second in a photo finish over Attachment Reserve.
Next out, Special Reserve went off at 3.90-1 in the Grade 3 Maryland Sprint Match Series Stakes at Pimlico on May 15, 2021. He rated two-wide off the pace-setter, Strike Power, then made his move after the leader on the turn. In the last eighth, Special Reserve pulled clear to win by 1 3/4 lengths, covering six furlongs in 1:08.91 for his first graded stakes win.
Special Reserve went on to win the Iowa Sprint Stakes at Prairie Meadows by 2 3/4 lengths next out on July 3. Although he turned in a gutsy effort in the Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap at Saratoga on July 31, he finished second behind longshot winner Lexitonian. In his final prep race for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, Special Reserve rated just behind a swift pace in the Grade 2 Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix Stakes Oct. 8 at Keeneland before taking command near the top of the stretch. He edged clear and then held off a late rally from Aloha West to prevail in 1:08.54 for three-quarters of a mile and earn an expenses-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Sprint Nov. 6 at Del Mar.
