Skinner finished fifth in his first career start for trainer John Shirreffs in July 2022 in a sprint at Del Mar, but Shirreffs was encouraged enough that he entered the bay Curlin colt in the Runhappy Del Mar Futurity and he finished third. He then finished his 3-year-old campaign finishing a well-beaten sixth in the Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes at 1 1/16 miles.

Skinner opened his 3-year-old season back versus maidens and drew away to a confidence-building victory on Feb. 12, 2023, at Santa Anita Park. He was then tested next on the road to the 2023 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve in the $400,000 San Felipe Stakes March 4 where Skinner finished third behind Practical Move.

Skinner's next outing was the Grade 1 $750,000 Santa Anita Derby on April 8, where he ran a solid effort to finish third when beaten a total of only a half a length. He later drew into the field for the Kentucky Derby but was withdrawn in the days leading up to the race. Instead, Skinner made his next appearance on the track in the $125,000 Los Alamitos Derby on July 8 and finished second. Skinner finished his 3-year-old season with a fifth-place finish in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic, a fifth-place finish in the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes, and a second-place finish in the Grade 3 Native Diver Stakes at Del Mar.

Following nearly a year layoff that encompassed almost his entire 4-year-old season, Skinner returned to the races on Nov. 1, 2024, with a second-place finish in a sprint prep allowance optional claiming race at Del Mar. From there, his next start was back for the second year in a row in the Grade 3 $100,000 Native Diver Stakes at Del Mar going 1 1/8 miles on the main track on Nov. 23. The second time proved to be the charm for Skinner in the Native Diver as he took care of business atop a six-horse field to win by a length.
