Wet Paint

Wet Paint won her maiden race in her second career start at age 2 in a one-mile race on a sloppy main track on Oct. 26, 2022, at Horseshoe Indianapolis. She was subsequently sent to Turfway Park for her third lifetime outing and finished second on a synthetic track on Dec. 14 to conclude her 2-year-old campaign.

Wet Paint returned for the first start of her 3-year-old season on Jan. 28, 2023, in the $200,000 Martha Washington Stakes at Oaklawn Park, which she won from off the pace at 1 1/16 miles by two lengths. To this point in her career, Wet Paint was 2-for-2 on dirt tracks and 0-for-2 on surfaces other than dirt.

Wet Paint was entered in a graded stakes for the first time in her next outing, which came in the Grade 3 $300,000 Honeybee Stakes back at 1 1/16 miles at Oaklawn park on Feb. 25. Once again racing on a wet track labeled sloppy, Wet Paint was sent off as the 8-5 favorite on the tote board in a field of 12 3-year-old fillies, and just as in the Martha Washington, the result for Wet Paint was the same. She sat off the pace and unleashed a strong closing move to hit the front in the stretch before drawing off to a three-length win. She ran the 1 1/16-mile distance in a time of 1:45.35.

Wet Paint swept the 3-year-old fillies stakes series at Oaklawn Park in her next start when she won the Grade 3 $600,000 Fantasy Stakes going 1 1/16 miles on a fast track on April 1. In her final prep for the Kentucky Oaks, Wet Paint was impressive in victory in the Fantasy. Sent off as the 3-5 favorite in a field of 10, Wet Paint sat last behind solid fractions for much of the race, and only began to launch her rally heading into the far turn. Wet Paint readily picked off rivals with a sweeping move on the turn and was already challenging for the lead turning for home. She went by the field with ease and maintained her advantage over fellow closer Taxed to win by 2 1/2 lengths on the wire in a time of 1:44.08.

The winning streak came to a halt in the $1.25 million Longines Kentucky Oaks as Wet Paint finished fourth in the most important U.S. race for 3-year-old fillies on May 5 at Churchill Downs.  Wet Paint subsequently came up short again in her next race in even more disappointing fashion when she finished second behind Hoosier Philly in the $172,000 Monomoy Girl Stakes on June 17 at Ellis Park.

Wet Paint resumed her winning ways at Saratoga when she won the Grade 1 $500,000 Coaching Club American Oaks going 1 1/8 miles for 3-year-olds on July 22. Sent off as the 1.45-1 second choice on the tote board in a field of five fillies, Wet Paint rallied from last to get up just in time to defeat Sacred Wish by a neck in a time of 1.50.68. It was another 8 1/2 lengths back to the third-place finisher.

Wet Paint is owned by Godolphin and trained by Brad Cox. She was bred in Kentucky by the sire Blame out of the dam Sky Painter by Street Cry.
