Gary and Mary West

Gary and Mary West made their fortune in the telecommunications industry and now operate West Health as well as the Gary and Mary West Foundation. They have been involved in the Thoroughbred industry for more than 30 years and currently have dozens of horses in training in addition to several broodmares at Dell Ridge Farm in Lexington, Ky. The Wests won the 2013 Breeders' Cup Juvenile with New Year's Day and the 2018 Breeders' Cup Juvenile with Game Winner.

In 2014 the Wests won a pair of Grade 1 races with their filly Room Service. They won the 2017 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes with Actress.

In 2017 the Wests' West Coast dominated the Travers Stakes and then the Pennsylvania Derby before finishing third in the Breeders' Cup Classic en route to champion 3-year-old male honors. He has finished second in his three 2018 starts, though two of those were the $16 million Pegasus World Cup and the $12 million Dubai World Cup. His career earnings currently top $5.7 million.

A new star emerged for the Wests in mid-2018 when 2-year-old Game Winner won at first asking at Del Mar and proceeded to reel off three straight Grade 1 wins, including the Del Mar Futurity and the American Pharoah Stakes and culminating with a victory in the Breeders Cup Juvenile after a stirring stretch battle with runner-up Knicks Go. Game Winner subsequently was named champion 2-year-old male. He made his 3-year-old bow in the second division of the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park and finished second by a neck on March 16. Two weeks later, a second top contender for the 2019 Kentucky Derby emerged for the Wests when Maximum Security led from start to finish to win the Xpressbet Florida Derby. Game Winner finished second again to stablemate Roadster in the Santa Anita Derby in his final prep for the 2019 Kentucky Derby.

The Wests entered the 2019 Kentucky Derby with two of the most highly regarded colts in the race. Game Winner endured a wide trip throughout and was not a factor, but Maximum Security took the early lead and fought off challenges in the stretch to cross the finish line first. However, after a 21-minute delay, Kentucky stewards judged that the colt had moved several paths to the right through the far turn at Churchill Downs, impeding the progress of three other horses. They disqualified Maximum Security from first and moved him to 17^th, denying the Wests their first Kentucky Derby victory.  

Other graded stakes winners campaigned by the Wests include Concert Tour, Code West, Poker Player, West Coast Belle, Book Review, Guilt Trip, and Title Contender. Past stars for the Wests include Dollar Bill, Buddha, Mass Media, High Limit, and Mongoose.
