Donald Adam, who made his first fortune in the cable television industry, served as Chairman and CEO of First America Bank until it was acquired by Citigroup for a reported $750 million in March 2005. In late 2005, Adam, along with a group of prominent Floridians, launched American Commerce Bank, headquartered in Tampa Bay. In 2006, the bank's name was changed to American Momentum Bank. Adam also is involved in real estate and construction.

Adam got involved in racing in 1995 after meeting William S. Farish, owner of Lane's End and former U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain. He prefers to breed his own horses rather than buy at the sales. His best-known runner most likely is the ultra-game turf mare Film Maker, who retired with earnings of more than $2.2 million and placed in three straight editions of the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1).

Courtlandt Farms is a 370-acre facility in Ocala, Fla. Adam breeds under the name TAC Holdings Inc., and most of his broodmares are in Kentucky. The foals are raised at Courtlandt.
