Mark Hennig grew up in Ohio where he helped his father, trainer John Hennig, with barn chores and ponying. He attended Ohio State while also working in trainer Neil Howard's barn, but left after two and a half years to work in his father's barn full-time.
After stints with Hall of Fame trainers Jack Van Berg and D. Wayne Lukas, Hennig struck out on his own in 1992 and had his first stakes win on Jan. 1, 1993 and finished in the top 10 trainers by money earned that year.

Hennig lives in New York with his wife and children.
